The National Scenic Byways Program also acknowledges SR 179 as the Red Rock Scenic Byway, highlighting it as one of the top scenic routes in the country.

A National Scenic Byway is recognized by the United States Department of Transportation for possessing one or more of six "intrinsic qualities": archaeological, cultural, historic, natural, recreational, and scenic.
Our journey began as the original "All-American Road" - Red Rock Scenic Byway, Village Park & Recreation, Inc. (VPRI, Inc.) committee, which initiated a petition to obtain the All-American Road designation.
With one of the original long term board members now serving as President, we continue our mission to promote the beauty, businesses, and attractions along the Byway. As part of this initiative, the byway focused on destination marketing to promote tourism under the campaign
"The Gateway to Sedona." The campaign highlighted key experiences with the tagline: "Play, Shop, Stay, Dine, Golf."

Village Park Recreation Inc. formed a subcommittee to petition the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) within the U.S. Department of Transportation, which oversees the National Scenic Byways Program, for the designation of a portion of the road passing through the Village of Oak Creek as a Scenic All-American Byway. The petition was later granted, and the designation began under Village Park Recreation Inc., LLC. (VPRI, Inc.) DBA trade name Red Rock Scenic Byway.

Village Park Recreation Inc. 501(c) (VPRI, Inc.) was formed. As stated in the Articles of Incorporation, filed with the Arizona Corporation Commission on May 12, 1999, "The character of affairs of the corporation has been to create recreation facilities and programs for the Big Park Community, Yavapai County, Arizona, and to direct such programs for the benefit of its residents."
